Crevasse Rescue
Venturing off-piste can provide skiers with the ultimate exhilaration of remote locations and fantastic powder, but being away from it all on unpatrolled slopes is not without danger. Many of the best off-piste runs in the Mont Blanc region is on glaciated terrain and the hazards of crevasses are always present.
While not a substitute for the experience of a guide, our mountaincraft courses are ideal for those who want to start acquiring the knowledge and skills needed for safe travel in high mountain environments. Avoidance of such risks is the principle safety policy, but should accidents occur the nature of being off-piste means dealing with the scenario without external assistance.
These courses are suited for all winter sports enthusiasts, and we would recommend undertaking a course each season to refresh and add to your knowledge.
Course Description
Specifically for those who want to venture not just off-piste, but into high mountain glaciated terrain, where there is the inherent danger of crevasses and seracs. You will be taught how to: read glacial terrain to minimise crevasse risk; travel roped up on glaciers, on foot and on skis; and carry out a crevasse rescue in a number of different scenarios.
Weather and lifts permitting, the course takes place on the Argentière glacier.
Watch the Crevasse Rescue film made by guide Sebastien Montaz-Rosset. It explains further what this course is about.
