Winter ascent Walker Spur, North Face of Grandes Jorasses, Chamonix Mont Blanc

The rest days in the North Face of the Grandes Jorasses

My Snowboard freeride course was cancelled and i was thinking what to do with the unexpected free week.  The sunny weather of the ongoing anticyclone gave me cravings for the sun and warmth.

I texted few friends: « fancy a short break rock climbing in the south of France? Sun and warm rock? »

I got an instant and simultaneous response from two mates Martin and Manu .. «  what about Walker on the Grandes Jorasses ? »

Hmmmm … well…. uh … why not .... the sun and crags in the south will wait.

So, after 3 cold and difficult days and 2 freezing bivouacs in this enormous north face we finally arrived on the summit of the Walker Point.

We have learned valuable lessons on this trip …. the superlight and over expensive thermarest mattresses don’t work well (don't work at all to be precise) in the presence of crampons and ice axes (particularly when space and light are limited) and the down sleeping bags are indeed flammable.

My dear friends, thank you for this great idea and the adventure, it was an unforgettable experience. Shall we go to the south now?
