It’s been an exciting few weeks here at Chamex; not only have we had the pleasure of working with Arcteryx at the Alpine Academy but we’ve also moved into our shiny new HQ. A welcoming community space at the bottom of the Aiguille du Midi cable car where you can call in for a coffee and plan your next trip with our guides, have a chat about conditions up the mountain or check out our capsule range of Arcteryx clothing and equipment.
We’ve been working our socks off over the last few weeks in time for the grand opening and have met some great folk from Arcteryx who came all the way over from Canada to help us pull it all together. Friends old and new gathered to celebrate with us on Thursday night and it was inspiring to see so many people come to wish us well in the next phase of the Chamex adventure, which got off to an exciting start with the Arcteryx Alpine Academy.
Four exhilarating days of climbing, bouldering and mountaineering with workshops on orientation, building shelters, nutrition, photography, acclimatisation and everything else you need to get out and explore the great outdoors.
The decidedly un-summery weather that we’ve been experiencing of late provided masses of fresh snow above 2000m. Ski alpinism and splitboarding aren’t necessarily what you expect to be doing in late June but conditions were perfect for making fresh tracks from the Aiguille du Midi! We had groups learning how to wield ice axes convincingly amongst the crevasses on the Mer de Glace, practising rope skills on multi-pitch rock climbs and getting out amongst the ice and snow of the Mont Blanc Massif.
You can find photos from the Arcteryx Academy on Instagram and Twitter at #arcteryxacademy, or on the Chamonix Experience Facebook page - keep in touch!
The Chamex community space can be found behind the Aiguille du Midi cable car station, just a few minutes walk from Chamonix centre. We’ve already welcomed so many people over the last week and we hope that you’ll join us soon.
