Ski Touring Introduction Day

Discover the freedom of ski touring in Chamonix with Chamex mountain guides

Get the taste of travelling through snow-covered mountains on skis, learn the basic skills and get familiar with the equipment.

On this one day ski touring course you will learn how to skin uphill, make kick-turns, use couteaux (crampons for skis) on steeper slopes, and how to apply and remove skins to your skis. You don't need any previous ski touring experience, just a reasonable level of fitness and confidence in skiing off-piste.

The Chamonix valley is renowned for its fantastic ski touring routes; the backcountry is easily accessible thanks to the lift system and you can be away from the crowded pistes in no time, exploring amazing off-piste areas such as Lac Blanc at Flegere, the Col du Berard at Le Buet, or the Col de Balme at Le Tour. You'll experience Chamonix at its finest and perhaps even spot the elusive chamois or some majestic bouquetin in the snowy wilderness!

This one day ski touring course is a great introduction if you are planning to do any longer routes. Once you've mastered the basics you can explore further with our Chamonix Ski Touring Weekend Group, or combine other alpine skills to join our Ski Mountaineering Course. Ski touring opens up a whole new world of exploration and adventures, including the famous Haute Route from Chamonix to Zermatt or even the ultimate experience of Skiing Mont Blanc - contact us for further details of all our group and private ski touring trips.

Chamonix Ski Touring Day

We'll meet at Chamonix Experience office in Chamonix for a nice coffee where you will meet your mountain guide and other members of the group.

Your mountain guide will check your equipment and help you organize your gear, before you head off to the mountains.

The day starts with a quick assessment of your ski level and an introduction to the ski touring gear - skins, bindings, couteaux, etc.

Your ski touring guide will teach you how to put the skins ON and OFF your skis, how to complete your first kick turn, how to pack your skis on your backpack and how to climb a small couloir.

The ski tour generally takes between one to two hours and covers 300 to 500 vertical meters through the snow.

From there you will enjoy a nice descent through off-piste terrain and your mountain guide will give you some tuition on how to ski with the light touring skis and soft boots.

A great day out that normally ends with a beer!

Crochues-Berard Traverse

Ski

One of Chamonix's classic ski tours, starting from La Flegere and passing through the beautiful Aiguilles Rouges Nature Reserve. We start with a nice traverse from the top of the Floria draglift, towards the Aiguilles Crochues bowl. After a short steep climb to the Col de Crochues, we ski down through the bowl, keeping high so that we can descend from the Col du Berard into the next valley.

At the bottom of the valley there is a flat section where ski tour through alpine forest, alongside a crystal clear stream to the charming old village of Le Buet with its old stone chalets and wooden barns. From here we can pick up the bus or the train back to Chamonix.
