Gran Paradiso Winter Splitboard Ascent (4,061 m)

Day 1 – Ascent to Rifugio Chabod (2,750 m)

After approximately two hours’ drive from Chamonix, we reach the starting point of our adventure, located near the end of the road at almost 2,000 metres altitude.We begin our ascent on skis or splitboard, travelling through larch forests before gradually entering the high alpine environment. A steady and progressive climb of around 3 to 4 hours brings us to Rifugio Chabod (2,750 m), where we spend the night.This first day is dedicated to a gradual acclimatisation to altitude and a review of essential mountain skills, including kick turns, pacing, and efficient movement on alpine terrain. A perfect introduction to the adventure ahead.

Day 2 – Gran Paradiso Summit (4,061 m) and descent to Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II (2,735 m)

An early start allows us to take advantage of the best snow conditions and reach the Laveciau Glacier at first light. From here, we rope up and begin our glacier ascent, travelling through spectacular terrain where numerous crevasses require careful route finding and concentration.With the impressive north face of Gran Paradiso rising above us, we continue steadily towards the summit. After approximately 4 to 5 hours of climbing, we reach the base of the final section: a short rocky scramble with crampons on our feet leading to the exposed summit ridge.The final steps to the famous Madonna statue mark our arrival on the summit of Gran Paradiso at 4,061 metres. The panoramic views across the Italian and French Alps provide a memorable reward for our efforts.After enjoying this special moment, it is time for the highlight of the day: the descent. A magnificent alpine splitboard descent takes us across glaciers and wide snowy slopes towards Rifugio Vittorio Emanuele II (2,735 m), where we enjoy a well-deserved evening in the mountains.

Day 3 – Ciarforon (3,642 m) and descent through the Grand Vallon

After the Gran Paradiso summit, the adventure continues with a second alpine objective: Ciarforon (3,642 m). Although lower in altitude, this beautiful summit offers a different and exceptional perspective over the Gran Paradiso massif.A first rewarding descent takes us towards the glacier, followed by an ascending traverse that leads us to the Grand Etret Col. From this high point, we enjoy an outstanding descent through the Grand Vallon, a wild and scenic route that gradually brings us back to the hamlet of Pont, the end point of our adventure. Return to Chamonix in the late afternoon.

Please note: This itinerary is provided as an example of the programme that can be completed in favourable weather and snow conditions. Your Chamex Mountain Guide will adapt the itinerary according to the weather, snow conditions, and the ability of the group to ensure the safest and most enjoyable experience possible. If conditions make the ascent of Gran Paradiso unsafe or unsuitable, we will modify the itinerary and choose an alternative objective in another area to make the most of the prevailing mountain conditions.

This is a demanding three-day splitboard mountaineering adventure, suitable for experienced splitboarders with a high level of fitness and previous backcountry experience.

The summit day involves approximately 1,300 metres of ascent above 3,000 metres, requiring 7–8 hours of sustained effort. You should be accustomed to long days in the mountains while carrying a backpack and be able to maintain a steady pace, energy and focus at high altitude.

Although Gran Paradiso is considered one of the more accessible 4,000-metre summits in the Alps, it remains a serious alpine objective that demands good endurance, mental resilience and solid mountain fitness.
