Experience Real Rock Climbing in Chamonix
Who Is This Beginner Rock Climbing Course For?
Our beginner rock climbing course in Chamonix is designed for complete beginners who want to discover the excitement of climbing outdoors in the stunning French Alps. Whether you have never climbed before or have only tried indoor climbing once or twice, this course will help you develop the skills and confidence to get started.
No previous climbing experience is required. Our fully qualified climbing instructors will guide you step by step, adapting the teaching to your experience, confidence and individual pace.
What You Will Learn on Your 3-Day Rock Climbing Course
Over three days, you will learn the essential skills needed to enjoy rock climbing safely and confidently. This outdoor climbing course combines practical instruction with plenty of time on the rock, allowing you to develop your technique in a supportive environment.
You will learn how to use climbing equipment, move efficiently on rock, communicate with your climbing partner and understand the fundamentals of rope systems and climbing safety.
The focus is on fun, confidence and learning by doing. Rather than pushing you to climb difficult routes, our instructors will help you build a solid foundation at your own pace.
Practical Climbing Exercises
Throughout the course, you will practise key techniques to improve your movement and understanding of climbing:
- Quiet feet: Learn to place your feet accurately and efficiently, saving energy and improving balance.
- Straight-arm climbing: Discover how to use your legs and body position to reduce strain on your arms.
- Route reading: Practise identifying handholds and footholds and planning your next few moves before you start climbing.
- Knot tying: Learn to tie and recognise a correctly tied figure-eight knot under instructor supervision.
- Climbing communication: Understand essential climbing commands and practise clear communication between climber and belayer.
- Equipment and safety checks: Learn about climbing harnesses, helmets, ropes and belay systems, and why safety checks are essential.
All instruction is delivered by fully qualified climbing instructors who will demonstrate each skill, provide individual feedback and help you progress safely throughout the three days.
Looking for a more in-depth learning experience? We also offer 5-day beginner rock climbing courses in Chamonix, giving you more time to develop your climbing technique, build confidence and practise essential skills on real rock.
WHERE WILL WE CLIMB?
The Chamonix valley offers several climbing areas suitable for beginners, including locations around Chamonix, Servoz and Vallorcine. These crags provide a variety of easy routes and accessible climbing spots, making them ideal for learning the basics of outdoor rock climbing.
Your climbing location will be selected by your fully qualified climbing instructor based on the weather, sun exposure, rock conditions, accessibility and your progress throughout the course. This flexibility allows us to find the most suitable conditions for your learning experience.
COURSE LEVEL AND FITNESS REQUIREMENTS
This course is designed for complete beginners, including those who have never climbed before or have only tried climbing a few times. No previous rock climbing experience is required.
Over three days, you will develop your climbing technique, become more confident moving on rock and learn essential rope skills. You will also be introduced to belaying, abseiling and climbing safety procedures under the supervision of your instructor.
You should have a reasonable level of physical fitness to climb on steeper rock and participate in approximately six hours of climbing activities per day over three consecutive days.
WEATHER AND ALTERNATIVE PLANS
Mountain weather can be unpredictable, but we aim to make the most of your time in Chamonix. If conditions are unsuitable at our planned climbing location, we may travel to another climbing area further down the valley or beyond Chamonix to find better weather and suitable rock conditions.
If outdoor climbing is not possible anywhere within a reasonable travelling distance, we will move the session to a local indoor climbing gym. Although indoor climbing differs from outdoor rock climbing, it still provides an excellent opportunity to practise movement techniques, footwork, balance and other essential climbing skills.
We aim to run the course in all weather conditions by adapting the location or activity whenever possible, rather than cancelling because of poor weather alone.
