4-Day Introduction to Alpine Trad Climbing in Chamonix
Chamonix Trad Climbing Course – A Perfect Introduction to Alpine Trad Climbing
Our Chamonix Trad Climbing Course is the ideal way to get started with traditional climbing in a world-class alpine setting. Designed for climbers who are new to trad or looking to build confidence placing gear and climbing multi-pitch granite, this four-day course offers expert instruction and unforgettable mountain experiences.
You’ll learn key skills such as crack and slab climbing techniques, gear placement, anchor building, rope management, and efficient movement on multi-pitch routes. With guidance from experienced instructors, you’ll gain the knowledge and confidence needed for independent trad climbing in the mountains — whether you’re aiming for future climbs in Chamonix, Yosemite, or beyond.
The course is based at the beautifully renovated Argentiere Hut, located at 2,771m above the Argentiere Glacier. This high-mountain refuge offers stunning views of iconic peaks like the Aiguille Verte and Mont Dolent. Run by the warm and welcoming Fred and Bea, the hut is a favorite meeting place for climbers and a fantastic base for alpine adventures.
Reaching the hut is an experience in itself: after taking the Grands Montets cable car, you’ll hike up and cross the Argentiere Glacier before another short hike up to the hut. Once there, you’ll have time to settle in and enjoy an afternoon climbing session nearby.
Throughout the Chamonix Trad Climbing Course, you’ll climb classic granite routes in the Chamonix valley, with options for all levels. The rock quality is exceptional, and the variety of climbs makes it an ideal learning ground for trad.
Join us for a transformative introduction to trad climbing in the heart of the Alps!

Itinerary
Arrival Day in Chamonix
You’ll meet your group and mountain guide at the Chamonix Experience office the evening before your course starts. A week prior, you’ll receive an email with all meeting details and your guide’s information. This is a great time to ask questions and confirm your gear. The exact itinerary depends on weather, so only a rough plan can be provided in advance.
Day 1
We’ll start early, taking the first lift to Grands Montets. From there, we’ll hike towards the Argentière Glacier, cross it, and follow a short trail to the Argentière Hut, a scenic 3-hour approach, arriving in time for lunch. In the afternoon, you’ll focus on climbing techniques and rope skills at a nearby crag. Your guide will assess your climbing level and plan routes for the week. Enjoy your first sunset at the hut with breathtaking views!
Days 2 – 4
Each day, your guide will lead a short workshop covering essential skills: using safety gear, building secure anchors, advanced belaying, lowering and rappelling, and retreating from a climb. You’ll tackle routes suited to your level, balancing enjoyment and challenge. On the afternoon of Day 4, you’ll return to Chamonix around 17:00.
