Beginner Ice Climbing Course Cogne – 5 Days

Discover the spectacular world of ice climbing in Cogne on this 5-day introductory course, designed for beginners and climbers looking to develop their ice climbing skills. Located in the Aosta Valley, Italy, just 1.5 hours from Chamonix, Cogne is one of the world’s best destinations for ice climbing.

With more than 130 ice climbing routes, Cogne offers frozen waterfalls and icefalls for a wide range of abilities, from Grade 2 to challenging Grade 6 routes. The two main climbing areas, Valnontey and Lillaz, provide an exceptional variety of terrain in a beautiful and wild alpine environment.

The Course

The aim of this 5-day beginner ice climbing course is to develop your confidence, climbing technique and essential rope skills on vertical ice. You will learn how to use ice axes and crampons efficiently, manage climbing ropes and understand the fundamentals of ice protection and mountain safety.

The course combines intensive instruction with plenty of climbing on both single-pitch and multi-pitch ice routes. Route length and difficulty will be adapted to your experience, fitness and progression throughout the week.

Our UIAGM mountain guides will be with you throughout the course, providing expert instruction and ensuring your safety. Particular attention is given to efficient ice climbing technique, including correct use of ice axes and crampons to climb effectively while protecting the fragile ice.

What You Will Learn

Throughout the course, you will develop essential skills including:

  • Ice axe and crampon techniques.
  • Efficient movement on steep ice.
  • Basic rope and belaying techniques.
  • Ice protection and anchor systems.
  • Abseiling and descent techniques.
  • Route selection and preparation.
  • Single-pitch and multi-pitch climbing techniques.
  • Mountain safety and decision-making.

Participants are divided into climbing teams of two, with a qualified UIAGM mountain guide leading each team. The course focuses on grades approximately French Grade 3–5, allowing you to progressively develop your skills and confidence.

Ice Climbing in Cogne

The course is based in Lillaz, a picturesque village at the end of the Cogne Valley. You will stay in a comfortable hotel and enjoy breakfast and dinner each day, with plenty of time to relax after a full day on the ice. And don’t miss the famous Italian hot chocolate!

Small Groups and Personalised Instruction

We keep groups small to maximise your learning and time on the ice.
