Eiger Climbing Course via Mittellegi Ridge
Eiger Climbing Course from Chamonix with UIAGM Mountain Guide
Join us for a 6-day guided Eiger climbing course starting in Chamonix, designed for experienced alpinists ready to tackle one of the most iconic summits in the Alps — the Eiger (3,970 m). This course offers a complete alpine training and acclimatisation program in the Mont Blanc massif, followed by the spectacular Eiger ascent via the Mittellegi Ridge, led by a certified UIAGM/IFMGA mountain guide.
The Eiger – A Peak Steeped in Alpine History
Located in the Bernese Oberland, the Eiger is part of the famous alpine trio: Jungfrau (4,158 m), Mönch (4,107 m) and Eiger (3,970 m). While not the tallest, the Eiger is certainly the most feared and admired, especially for its notorious North Face — the “Mordwand”.
The first ascent of the Eiger was achieved in 1858 by Christian Almer, Peter Bohren, and Charles Barrington, via the western flank. The Mittellegi Ridge, your route on this course, was first climbed in 1921 and remains one of the most scenic and committing alpine ridges in Europe.
The Eiger has captured the imagination of climbers and storytellers for decades. From “The White Spider” to “Eiger Dreams”, and the classic film “The Eiger Sanction”, this mountain has long been a symbol of bold alpine adventure. Now it’s your turn!
Course Overview: 6 Days of Alpine Climbing Progression

Prepare for your Eiger climb with 4 days of hands-on training, including:
- Multi-pitch rock climbing in Les Aiguilles Rouges or Plan de l’Aiguille
- Rock climbing in mountaineering boots skills
- Ice axe and crampons refresher
- Acclimatisation climbs of classic peaks such as Aiguille du Moine (3,412 m), Aiguille du Peigne (3,192 m)
These days are designed to build confidence and technical competence on rock and snow, while ensuring you are fully acclimatised to high altitude before the Eiger summit push.
Day 5: Travel to Grindelwald & Hike to Mittellegihütte (3,355 m)
Transfer to Grindelwald, Switzerland, and hike to the Mittellegihütte, perched dramatically on the ridge. This hut night is key for resting and acclimatising before the summit day.
Day 6: Summit Day – Ascent of the Eiger (3,970 m)
Climb the Eiger via the Mittellegi Ridge, an exposed and technical route graded AD / IV+ to 5b. The ridge offers 610 m of climbing on steep, mixed terrain. You’ll use ropes, protection, and alpine climbing techniques under the guidance of your 1:1 private guide.

Itinerary
Welcome Meeting in Chamonix
The Eiger climbing course starts with an evening meeting with your mountain guide at the Chamonix Experience office opposite the Aiguille du Midi lift station. Your mountain guide will go through the plan for the week and answer any questions you may have. You should bring your equipment (rental and/or personal) to the meeting, for your guide to check that you have everything you will need for the course.
Day 1 – Rock Climbing in Chamonix
We start the Eiger climbing course with rock climbing at one of the great multi-pitch areas in Chamonix to refresh our rope work skills. We will choose nice easy itineraries that will give us the opportunity to check your level and work on improving your climbing and rope skills. Les Aiguilles Rouges or Plan des Aiguilles offer some great climbing and scrambling terrain to practice on.
Day 2 – Mer de Glace & Couvercle Hut (2687m)
Today we will do an ice axe, crampons and rope skills refreshment on the glacier at Mer de Glace. Your mountain guide will also teach you basic crevasse rescue skills which are essential for safe travel on glaciers. You will then hike up to the Couvercle hut, where you will spend the night. Sleeping at altitude is an excellent way to acclimatise.
Day 3 – Aiguille du Moine (3412m)
Today is an early start to climb the Aiguille du Moine at 3412m via the normal route, on a south face over mixed terrain of rock and ice. Aiguille du Moine is a magnificent mountain; you’ll have a great climb and a long day! You will descend back to Chamonix after the climb and your guide will drop you back at your accommodation.
Day 4 – Aiguille du Peigne (3192m)
Today we tackle the normal route on the Aiguille du Peigne; it is 500m long, but a relatively easy and fast climb (4b max). The Aiguille du Peigne will give you a good idea of what to expect on the Eiger climb: a quick simul-climb up and down the mountain, while being protected by your guide on a ‘short rope’.
Day 5 – Grindelwald, Mittellegihütte (3355m)
Your 4 days of training are completed and you’re ready to climb the Eiger! With your guide, you will drive over to Grindelwald where you will hike up to the Mittellegihütte (3355m). The hike takes around 2.5 hours over rocky and glaciated terrain up to the hut, where you will spend the night. Get a good night’s sleep, as tomorrow we begin our ascent of the Eiger!
Day 6 – Ascent of the Eiger (3970m)
Today is the big day! We usually do our ascents via the Mittellegi ridge which is the most spectacular. The climb is 615m over a rock and mixed terrain of up to 5b. If the conditions are not good for the ridge, we will choose another itinerary, such as the classic South Ridge (AD or III). These itineraries are not technically very difficult, but they involve a full day of scrambling over tricky terrain where you have to stay well focused. After the descent we will travel back to Chamonix, where the course will finish over a well-deserved glass of beer.

FAQ
Q1 How difficult is the Eiger via the Mittellegi Ridge?
The Mittellegi Ridge is a serious alpine climb graded AD/IV–V with long sections of exposed scrambling and climbing. You must have prior experience with multi-pitch climbing, glacier travel, and mountaineering at high altitude.
Q2 Do I need to be acclimatised before the Eiger climb?
Yes, acclimatisation is essential for success and safety on the Eiger. This course includes climbs like Aiguille du Moine and Aiguille du Peigne, as well as an overnight stay at the Couvercle hut to help you adjust to altitude before summit day.
Q3 What experience do I need to join this Eiger course?
Participants should have a solid background in alpine climbing, including confidence with rock climbing at grade 4/5, glacier travel, and using crampons and ice axe. If unsure, consider taking our Alpine Climbing L1 course first.
Q4 Is the course suitable for solo climbers?
Yes! We match solo climbers into small groups with a UIAGM-certified guide (typically 1:1 or 1:2 ratio), offering a personalised and professional climbing experience.
Q5 What equipment do I need for the Eiger climb?
You’ll need technical alpine gear including crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, mountaineering boots, and climbing clothing. A full equipment list is available for download from this page, and rentals are available upon request.
Q6 When is the best time to climb the Eiger?
The best period for the Mittellegi Ridge ascent is from mid-July to mid-September, when conditions are generally stable and the ridge is free of excessive snow. Book early to secure hut reservations and guide availability.
Q7 What happens if the weather is bad on summit day?
If weather or mountain conditions make the Eiger ascent unsafe, your guide will propose an alternative objective of a similar level, ensuring you still make the most of your climbing week in the Alps. Reschedule or cancellation with refund are not available, please read our terms and conditions carefully before booking the course.
